Locum Insurance – it works when you can’t

Most doctors are aware of the potential costs involved in employing a Locum in the event of incapacity and that funding towards this is now limited, with many PCT’s no longer making any payments towards the cost.  Those that do are tending to make only limited payments.

Locum Insurance can help to ease the burden, making payment of benefit after an agreed length of time (the ‘deferred period’), and then continuing to make regular payments either until a return to work, or until the maximum payment period has been reached.

The Pulse Locum Insurance Scheme provides cover in units of £10 per week, Plan A providing benefit from week 5-26 and Plan B from week 27-52. This means that whether or not you receive PCT reimbursement you can choose the level of benefit most appropriate to you. (alternative deferments of 8 and 13 weeks are also available)

The brochure includes a table which shows the premium per £10 of benefit under both Plan A and Plan B. This will enable you to calculate the cost of the benefit required. Please remember to add Insurance Premium Tax (currently 5%) to give the total gross monthly premium.

Full details of the Scheme are given in the Brochure and Policy Wording, which you should read carefully, together with the Key Facts Summaries; however, the main points are as follows:

  • Cover provided for G.P. Principals, Salaried Doctors, Practice Nurses and Practice Managers
  • Guaranteed Acceptance  (height/weight limitations only apply)
  • Cover is not reviewable or renewable on an Individual basis - once you enter the Scheme cover will continue until one of the cancellation clauses applies. Cover will not be cancelled due to any change in your health.
  • Weekly Benefit of up to £2000 per week available
  • Benefits Indexed by 5% per annum
  • Jury Service Add-on cover available
  • Group discounts available

Should you then wish to proceed, simply print off the application form, complete and return to Pulse Independent I.F.A., 147 Connaught Avenue, Frinton-on-Sea, Essex. CO13 9RA.
